Hi Lee,
Firstly, congrats on a great website and service.
I own a small record company and I am thinking of expanding to incorparate a very similar service to yours. (Don’t worry, i don’t think we would be in competition with each other)
This is what i hope for -
An online libary of clips of music available.
All this music will be from unsigned, or indie signed bands or artists.
The libary will be focused towards the computer game industry. (I guess you cover this, but i want to specifically focus on developers and publishers only.)
Music will be catagorised.
When subbmitting material, the band/artist will specify if they would like to sell exclusive or non-exclusive.
All royallty free.
I would like to have one fixed price for tracks say. One for ‘bundles’ etc. (No disrespect to your system. It is a very well thought out way of doing things)
I guess i’m just bouncing this off you because i see you made a success of your business which is very similar.
The more i think about this, the more problems i come up with. Like how to provide a fully automated service to my customers….FTP usernames etc etc
I would really appreciate some advice, feedback or just how to get going really.
I’ve been thoroughly put off by the whole business plan thing. Seems awfully complicated.
Guidance would be great!
Thank you for your time.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Andy Charrington.
Hi Andy,
Sorry for the delay in replying. I am so busy at the moment; I need more hours in the day
I will start with your comments about business plans; I agree they are very daunting. I guess every business needs a plan of some kind but I suppose the amount of formality and detail you go into depends on its purpose. Generally speaking, if you are trying to raise finance you need a very good and detailed business plan. If it is for your own purposes a few notes in an A4 pad may serve the purpose.
I think the computer games industry is a good niche to target, definitely a global industry.
I don’t want to come across as negative but wish to be realistic and have to say that the music industry is very hard to get into, as I am sure you will know. For me it is a passion and this is the biggest reason I do it. If I was just out to make money there are many other easier ways. The Royalty Free music sector is incredibly competitive, you only have to Google the term to see how many there are.
As far as the ftp access and the technical side of web development is concerned I feel that is a specialist area and as I know little about it I would suggest getting a good web developer on board to develop an eCommerce system. Unfortunately this will cost money but everything does when you start a business.
I would say that the attributes needed to develop this kind of business are passion for music, commitment and tenacity. I wish you luck with the venture.
Regards,
Lee
