There are many ways that you can license music and much to understand with regards to copyright (this is what makes it complicated).

The three main copyright areas you need to think about are: -

1. Synchronisation – What will the music be combined with? film, multi-media, website etc
2. Mechanical – How many duplications of the product and the music do you wish to make? 
3. Performance – Is your product going to be accessible by the public or broadcast on TV?
