What is an Underscore / Bed?

Removing the vocal / melody part of a song or piece of music creates what is known as an underscore or bed. However, if you are going to replace the vocals / melody with an instrument then this would be an instrumental version, not an underscore.

Underscore and bed versions are created to allow room for voiceovers and narrative that the media producer may wish to add to the production. This can be less distracting to the viewer than music with strong melody or prominent vocals.
